I received an advanced copy of this through Netgalley.
Shawn Smucker is incredible at making you feel things through his writing. I have no doubt he'll continue to produce great stories. This book contained everything except for romance - and that's a nice change of pace. Folklore, fantasy, magic, sadness, strength, hope, fear, and everything in between. I have found, personally, that it is hard to really feel emotion in far-fetched fantasy writing, but Smucker blurred the lines while keeping the emotions of the characters raw and real.
I would definitely be interested in reading a spin-off of Abra's journal.
3.5 stars.
stream of thoughts wasn't recorded well on this one ----
2% - I already love the writing style but I am also already depressed. I want to hug the narrator.
25% - every word is soaked with melancholy, even when he is talking about happy things, but it’s not overwhelming. It’s almost comforting. It feels real.
