Thank you to Goodreads for an ARC copy of this book.
I do not have any siblings. I have never been in a physically abusive relationship. I do not have any known mental instabilities such as obsession or narcissism. And I still found ways to relate to this book. There are some definite trigger warnings surrounding this book. I am not easily alarmed or grossed out by things, and there were a couple of times where I sat the book down and thought, "woah, that was a bit of a line crossing." Disturbing, unsettling, manipulative, and squeamish with a twist I did not see coming. I am fascinated by obsession. Every character in this book has some degree of unhealthy obsession. It's hard to tell who is worse - main character Callie, sister Tilda, or sister's new boyfriend Felix. The book follows the two sisters, with flashbacks to their childhood highlighting how Callie has always admired and been less than Tilda, as they navigate their relationship, as well as Tilda's new relationship and how the three are destined to be intertwined forever. 4 Stars Mild spoilers/leading below the line.
The book has had some mixed reviews, but I want to praise it for doing what few books do - tackling that abuse (physical and mental) is not limited to one gender. And that often, people will jump to the conclusion that men hold all of the power and control (controllingmen.com). Women are not always as powerless and innocent as they seem.
